What is an ink absorber?
An ink absorber is a component inside inkjet printers that absorbs excess ink during the printing process. It is a part of the printer’s waste ink management system. When the printer prints or performs maintenance tasks such as cleaning or alignment, some ink is inevitably ejected from the print head but is not used in the final printed image. This extra ink is collected in the ink absorber to prevent it from spilling or causing damage to the printer.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of its function:
- Ink Absorption: The absorber is typically a sponge or foam material that soaks up and holds the excess ink.
- Location: It is generally located in the printer’s bottom or inside the print head area, where the waste ink is directed during printer maintenance.
- Maintenance Task: During routine tasks like head cleaning or deep cleaning, the printer forces ink through the print head to ensure no clogging, and this ink is directed into the absorber.
- End of Life: Over time, the ink absorber can become full and saturated, causing the printer to show an error or warning. At this point, the absorber either needs to be cleaned, replaced, or reset.
It’s important to monitor the ink absorber’s condition, especially with older printers, to ensure it doesn’t become too full, which could lead to printer malfunctions or leakage of ink.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is an ink absorber in a Canon printer?
An ink absorber in a Canon printer is a component that collects and absorbs the excess ink during maintenance tasks, such as print head cleaning or ink flushing. It helps prevent spilled ink from damaging the printer. The ink absorber is typically a sponge or foam material that is located inside the printer, where it captures waste ink that is ejected from the print head but not used for printing.
2. What does “the ink absorber is full” mean?
When you receive a message saying “the ink absorber is full,” it means that the internal sponge or foam material that collects waste ink has reached its capacity. This typically happens after a prolonged period of regular printer maintenance (such as cleaning cycles). Once the absorber is full, it can no longer collect ink, and the printer will stop functioning properly until the issue is addressed.
3. When do I reset the ink absorber?
You should reset the ink absorber when your printer displays the “ink absorber is full” warning. This indicates that the waste ink collector has reached its limit. Resetting the ink absorber does not physically empty the absorber but allows the printer to resume its operation. However, it is crucial to clean or replace the ink absorber at this point, as continuing to use the printer with a full ink absorber could lead to ink leakage or other malfunctions. If you do not feel comfortable cleaning or replacing the absorber, it’s best to take your printer to a service center.
4. Can I reset the ink cartridges?
No. You won’t be able to reset ink cartridges through the waste ink pad counter resetter. To do otherwise, you must buy CISS or Auto-Reset Chips or purchase a new cartridge with a Cartridge Resetter. We don’t provide this product.
